5 Minutes With Blaqbonez: From Evolution to Affirmation, Emeka Must Shine

To say that 2023 has been a bumper year for Blaqbonez would be an understatement. He’s released his acclaimed album, Emeka Must Shine, showcased his exceptional rap artistry on the highly anticipated Hennessy Cypher 2023, made Rolling Stone’s list of Innovators Shaping Rap’s Next 50 Years, and is gearing for a world tour and the release of a deluxe version of Emeka Must Shine. Still, between all these, Blaqbonez has retained his status as a creative internet sensation and even popped up in a video shoot with Tion Wayne and M24.

Blaqbonez has ensured he’s on the tip of the tongue regarding conversations around Nigeria’s most unique rappers. Whether it’s unapologetically declaring himself the best rapper in Africa, evolving from a rapper into a popstar or having the hardest verse of the year on “Halleluyah” with CKay, he’s cemented himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Blaqbonez doesn’t think anyone is better than him at anything, and he’s continued to sharpen the tools in his arsenal, proving he’s equally oustanding hopping on dancehall and party bangers. Lyrically, the rapper isn’t afraid to create a different persona, often touching on the struggles of his life before fame, women, touring the world and making crazy money. His relatability and no-fucks-given attitude have endeared him to a legion of fans and followers, whom he gifted with his recently released album, Emeka Must Shine. A project he describes as affirmative. It’s not just music: a movement, a testament to Blaqbonez’s unapologetic brilliance.

Here, I meet with Blaqbonez at the Piano People’s Festival in London right before he goes on stage, to discuss his unwavering support for Chelsea, his plans to tour the world, and his out-of-the-box approach to music.

Hey Emeka! You’ve just released your album, Emeka Must Shine congrats! What songs did you enjoy making the most?

Honestly, I wouldn’t say there’s a particular song I enjoyed making the most. I loved the process of making every single song on the album because Emeka Must Shine is more than a line. It’s more than music. It’s an affirmation. No matter what anyone tries to do, Emeka will be here, shining and popping.

You went to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea play. What was the experience like, and why do you even support the 10th club on the table?

It was the first game I watched live and Chelsea literally blew my mind. I started supporting Chelsea because of Eden Hazard, he was like my childhood legend.

What would you say is the goal for Blaqbonez?

I don’t want to be just a rapper or pop star. I want to be able to express myself genuinely and honestly, live comfortably, and create the craziest shit I can.

What song are you playing to get a party started?

Right now, it’s definetely Holy Ghost by Omah Lay. Crazy tune!

Are there any creative avenues you’d like to explore other than music?

Definitely film and fashion. I’ve directed two of my music videos; “Back In Uni” and “Ice Spice”, and I feel like I’m the most creative person I know. It comes natural to me, and I don’t have to over-kaku (overthink) it.

What does Blaqbonez have planned for 2024?

Next year, we’re reloading the deluxe to Emeka Must Shine, and I’m definitely going on tour, because I have fans all over the world and I really wanna connect with them.

Emeka Must Shine. Baddie Must Shine. So must you.
